Happy Financial Education Month!

April has been designated as National Financial Education month and there are lots of opportunities for Marylanders to attend events or workshops to learn new tips on managing money. The Commission on Financial Education and Capability, of which MD CASH Campaign is a member, has compiled a calendar of financial education events, which can be found on
In honor of National Financial Education Month, MD CASH is launching its new “Passport to Prosperity” incentive program, where you can earn points while learning about money. You can sign up either online at or by attending a class and getting a Passport from a local Educator. After signing up, you can earn points in a variety of ways: attend CASH Academy classes, do something financially-related like checking your credit report, or reach a financial goal such as saving a set amount of money.

‘Common Cents’ About Record Keeping and Taxes for the Self Employed

Maryland CASH’s regular column in the Prince George’s Sentinel took a hard look at self-employment this week. Self-employment can be a great way to bring in additional income or to create your own job, but it comes with increased tax responsibilities. An organized system to keep track of your business income and expenses can make the process of paying taxes less difficult.  You may even be able to deduct some of business expenses to reduce your tax liability.

Here’s the catch – in order to deduct any expenses you have for your business, you need to keep adequate records of money coming in (income) and money going out (expenses). This does not have to mean expensive online software or a fancy spreadsheet—it’s whatever works for you and makes sense for your business.  Read more here: Maryland CASH has even more information about record keeping and taxes for the small business or self-employed person here.

MD CASH Campaign Backs Bill to Ease Taxes on Cancelled Student Loan Debt

MD CASH Campaign works to promote the financial security of Maryland residents through programs and policy. One of the bills MD CASH is backing this legislative session is a bill that would eliminate the requirement for taxpayers who have had student loan debts cancelled or forgiven to report it as income in MD state filings and to pay the added tax. The bill is sponsored by  Delegate Eric Luedtke, D- Montgomery.

Director Robin McKinney was quoted in the University of Maryland Diamondback newspaper on the subject of the bill. People who default on student loans are already in obvious financial straits, McKinney said. Without this bill, she said, “We’re also creating a tax burden for them on top of it.”  Read more here:
